A VIN check gives you information. What you do with it matters just as much. Here are useful questions to ask a seller after reviewing the report:

• The report shows an accident in [year] — can you tell me more about that?
• The title shows as rebuilt — was it in a significant accident?
• Why does the mileage look lower than expected for this age?
• There is a recall listed — has it been serviced at a dealer?
• How many owners has this vehicle had? Do you have any paperwork?
• Can I have a mechanic inspect it before we finalize a price?
